Being a huge Simon & Garfunkel fan I bought a ticket to see Art Garfunkel in concert at The London Palladium back in April 1997.
I was very excited to be attending as I’d never heard or seen him live before. I thought I would write him a letter requesting to meet, I never thought for a second that anything would come of it.
Anyhow, after listening to him sing all of his classic hits from both the Simon & Garfunkel years and his solo albums Art and his band came out again to take their bows. I took this opportunity to throw my letter up on to the stage and to my surprise he picked it up and smiled at me as he walked off in to the wings.
I left the Theatre and noticed people were gathering outside at the stage door and so I waited with them. Sure enough Art and his band exited and greeted the crowd. Art stayed and signed autographs, and as he was signing my concert ticket he said “I got your letter, I’ll read it later tonight”.
I went away feeling very happy and didn’t think anything else of it. I never imagined that he would call me a week later and ask me to meet him.
I never imagined he would invite me on two tours with him as his personal assistant and opening act.
I surely never dreamed Art would record us singing together at Ted Spencer Studios in New York, and that 20 years later we would still be friends.
Yet all this happened and much more!
I will share more of these memories at some point in the near future.
